Geography Project Part 4
Rihanna
My project then brought me from Barbados to Rihanna, an internationally famous singer who is from Barbados but now lives and works in Los Angeles. She then brought me to the Central Valley Project in California.

Central Valley Project
The Central Valley Project is a scheme set up to provide water to provide irrigation to much of the California Central Valley. They do this by regulating and storing water in reservoirs in the northern half of the state which has plenty of water, and transporting it to San Joaquin Valley and its surroundings by canals, aqueducts and pump plants. In addition to the Irrigation system, the system also creates over 2,000 megawatts of hydroelectricity and controls flooding in the areas surrounding its reservoirs.

Teak Wood
Teak wood is the substance used for making the Indian sitar, it comes from the tree, Tectona Grandis. It is highly durable even when not treated with oil or varnish.
Much of the teak cultivated is exported to Indian Countries.
As well as making the sitar, teak is also used extensively
in India to make doors and window frames, furniture, and columns and beams in
old type houses. It is also very resistant to termite attacks. Teak has been cultivated in The Caribbean Islands.
Forestation in the Caribbean Islands
More than 99% of the forest in the Caribbean is Tropical forestry. These forests are harvested for all different uses, including Teak Wood which i mentioned above. Though there is efforts to preserve forestry, some islands make more progress than others. In the Caribbean the The Bahamas have the highest forest area per capita, whereas Barbados has one of the lowest.

Indian Sitar
The sitar is a plucked stringed instrument predominantly
used in Indian and Pakistani classical music. It gets its sound from its hollow
base, curved frets that move under sympathetic strings, known as taarif. A
sitar can have 21, 22, or 23 strings, among them there are six or seven strings
that run over the frets.
The frets are movable, which allows for more accurate
playing and fine tuning. The Sitar is made out of Teak wood. Teak wood is found
in places such as Africa and the Caribbean
The instrument is balanced between the player's left foot and right knee. The hands move freely without having to carry any of the instrument's weight. The player plucks the string using a metallic pick called a mizraab. The thumb stays on the top of the fretboard just above the main gourd. Generally only the index and middle fingers are used for fingering although a few players occasionally use the third.

So, last Friday, we all participated in the Ian Daly Swim a Mile with a Smile. It was so much fun, i was in a group with Orla and Emma, and together we swam two miles. Everyone had a great time doing the sponsored swim in aid of Barretstown and Crumlin Children's Hospital, all together St Wolstans swam 42 miles! Which beat our previous record, in the end we all finished off by going to Blanchardstown and getting an Eddie rockets, yum :)

So, on wednesday we did an army assault course in Puddinhill, it was brilliant! I was dreading it at the start but i really got into it. We all arrived back wet and mucky to be hosed off. Then prises were presented after words, and we were given an award for most people from a school who entered. I was so tired afterwards but it was definitley worth it!

Work Experience!
For my Work Experience placement, i went to a beauty and massage clinic in Celbridge. I had loads of fun and learned a lot about being a beauty therapist. I spent my first two days as a receptionist, taking phone calls, helping with appointments and organising the massage rooms. This wasn't really boring as i got to interact with clients and i like talking on the phone. I also got to sit in on manicures and massages to see what the therapist does.
I got a lift there everyday at 10 and worked untill 3 but got half days sometimes. I got my lunch break at 1 untill 2. Altogether, it was a really great experience, however, even though i had a good time, i dont think its an area i'd want to get involved in, as it wouldnt suit me.

Pilgrimage in Kildare!
On Tuesday we ventured out to Kildare to go on a pilgrimage to the areas associated with St. Brigid. This was such a great trip, we started off in Kildare town, where we were shown a video all about the history of the town and St Brigid. We then set off walking towards St Brigid's cathedral, where we were shown around the church, it was so big! And really beautiful and ornate, the only downside was that it was really cold.
Then we set off towards a tower, and the place where Brigid used to light fires to let everyone know it was a friendly place and that they were welcome, and we also got to see Brigids kitchen. It was really interesting and made everything seem so much more real. We then got to have a look in Kildare Village, it was great to have a look around the shops and get a cup of tea in starbucks :)
After that, we set off on a long walk towards St Brigids well. For me this was the best part of the trip, we got to say a prayer around the well, and bless ourselves with holy water, it was really nice.
Thats it really :)

Fighting Words
Okay so i already mentioned we went to a creative writing workshop in Dublin last week :) Thought i'd write a bit more about it. So when we arrived we immediatly started on creating a dialogue, Caitriona and Isabelle got up and improvised a story line about a girl who fancied her best friends brother. From this we created a peice of creative writing that we were eventually left to finish off ourselves.
It was overall a really good experience, i found it really benefitial to my creative writing and the guidance and tips i got from people there were really helpfull. It was also really fun and a change from normal english essay writing :) I really liked it :)
As well as that we've been up to loads this week, Tuesday we headed down to Mullingar to perform our drama, which was overall so much more successfull than we thought, and it was great getting to see everyone elses plays aswell, everyone had put in so much effort and it really showed :)
So thats all for today,
